Flotilla 2010 - Greece
Gain experience. Have fun and make friends. Schedule will be announced by March 2010.

Vega Sailing School is organizing a small flotilla, maximum four boats, this summer in Greece. The flotilla is supposed to be a relaxed and simple cruise, not an attempt to cover great mileage, so less experienced crews, or crews with kids can also participate and enjoy. If you recently completed a sailing course, this may be a perfect oportunity to gain experience as a skipper, but you can still count on us for advice or a refresher lesson.

Daily Activities

The plan is to spend 3 to 4 hours sailing daily (15 to 20 miles), just enough to reach the next island or cove. Together, we will plan the route at the beginning of the cruise, and depending on weather conditions and wishes of all crews, change it along the way. It may seem that 4 hours of sailing is too short, but count on at least additional hour to depart and dock or anchor at destination. Additional time is also needed for provisioning, cooking and everything else we call "living aboard." The rest of the day is for swimming, snorkeling, fishing, visiting places etc.

We should depart from an anchorage, or port, around 11AM, and arrive to the new place to spend the night around 4PM. This schedule allows us to, when the sun is at its peak, spend time under cockpit shade, and the rest of the daytime for beach activities. By arriving around 4PM, we also increase our chances to find good spots at potentially crowded harbours, as it usually happens during summer months. This is also the reason why we want to limit the number of boats to four.

Naturally, this is only the plan, but it may happen that we must depart early in the morning and sail all day, or not sail at all due to weather conditions, or just to stay longer at certain places because we want so.

Our Role

We are the initiators of this venture and will do the following:

  • get in touch with everybody who wants to join, we are the single point of contact;
  • introduce incomplete groups to each other (if needed);
  • give advice and help make right decisions during the cruise;
  • give advice for preparations: literature, gear,...;
  • inform the skippers about charter details (requirements, licenses, deposits, insurance,...) before signing charter agreement;
  • coordinate activities along the way, and with the good will and tolerance of all crews, enjoy our "Commodore" role;

We believe that good will and our experience will make this a successful little adventure.

Technical Details
  • Flotilla is made up of maximum of four boats, crewed with self-sufficient crews (at least one qualified skipper and one sailor with adequate experience);
  • Every crew signs its own contract with charter agency for the boat they will sail on;
  • Boats are normally rented on weekly basis, starting on Saturdays or Sundays, depending on agency. Of course, a crew may rent for more than one week;
  • Being a flotilla member is completely voluntarily and that right cannot be taken away. It may happen that the pace of the cruise may not fit every crew all the time, so the crew may leave and rejoin the flotilla at will, without being finger-pointed by others;
  • The deposit to the charter agency should be paid in spring, in order to get the best price with the best choices of boats.
